"Is Mahavastu the same as Feng Shui?" is one of the most common questions I hear as a Mahavastu Expert in Australia. Both are ancient systems used to bring harmony, health and prosperity into a home or workplace, and both have found a global audience far beyond their countries of origin. But they come from different traditions, use different tools, and often recommend different remedies. Here's how they actually compare.
Different Origins
Mahavastu is a modern, research-based evolution of Vastu Shastra, the Vedic Indian science of architecture that dates back thousands of years and is documented in Sanskrit texts. Feng Shui, meaning "wind-water," developed separately in ancient China, rooted in Taoist philosophy and traditional Chinese geomancy. Despite arising in different parts of Asia and shaped by different philosophies, both systems reached a similar conclusion: the space around us actively affects our health, relationships and success, not just our comfort.
Different Concepts of Energy
Feng Shui is built around the flow of Qi, a life force or cosmic energy that moves through a space, and practitioners aim to keep Qi flowing smoothly rather than stagnant or blocked. Mahavastu instead works with Panchtatva, the five elements of earth, water, fire, air and space, mapped across specific directions of a building. Rather than tracking a single flowing energy, a Mahavastu Consultant reads how these five elements are expressed across the directional energy grid of a home or office, and identifies exactly where an element is missing, excessive or blocked.
Different Diagnostic Tools
Feng Shui traditionally uses the Bagua map, an eight-sided energy map placed over a floor plan, often combined with a compass reading (using a tool called a Luopan) to align it correctly. Mahavastu uses a directional energy grid linked to the five elements, and typically incorporates the occupants' own birth details through Astro Vastu, reading the building and the person's planetary influences together. This is one of the clearest differences: Mahavastu consultations often go beyond the building itself to include the individual's own chart and, in many cases, Numerology as well, giving a more personalised result than a floor-plan reading alone.
Different Remedies
Feng Shui remedies commonly include items such as wind chimes, mirrors, crystals, water features and specific colour placements tied to the Bagua zones. Mahavastu remedies are also non-invasive, using placement, colour, décor and specific objects, but they are selected based on which of the five elements needs to be strengthened or reduced in a particular direction, rather than Bagua zones. Both systems avoid unnecessary demolition or major renovation wherever possible, which is part of why each has grown in popularity among homeowners who want practical, low-disruption solutions.
Can You Use Both Together?
Because the two systems are built on different underlying models, mixing remedies from both without understanding either properly can lead to conflicting advice. A genuine Mahavastu Expert will generally recommend staying consistent within one framework for a given space, applying the Mahavastu five-element and directional analysis fully, rather than layering in Feng Shui elements piecemeal. If you're drawn to both, it's worth discussing with your consultant which system will be applied so your corrections stay coherent.
Which One Is Right for You?
If you're drawn to the Vedic roots of Indian tradition, or you want your birth chart and numerology considered alongside your space, Mahavastu is generally the better fit, and it's the framework I use with every client. If you're more familiar with Chinese philosophy and the concept of Qi, Feng Shui may feel more intuitive. Either way, the underlying goal is the same: a home or workplace that supports your health, relationships and growth rather than working against them.
